Susi Holliday’s writing has always captivated me, and her latest release, The Hike, is no different. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Swiss Alps, the book creates a palpable sense of tension. We follow a family—two sisters and their husbands—on a hiking trip, only to find that something horrific is about to unfold in the mountains, leaving only two survivors.

I was particularly impressed by how Susi Holliday delved into each character’s layers, heightening the dynamics as they ascended the mountain. The relationship between the two sisters, Cat and Ginny, was especially compelling; their thoughts about each other added depth to the story and kept me eager to see their fate. From the very start, the prologue hints at impending doom, and Holliday expertly weaves in layers of suspicion, drawing readers deeper into her characters’ lives. Though they may not be particularly likable, this complexity makes them all the more intriguing, with the character development impressively crafted.

As I mentioned, the atmosphere in The Hike is intensely gripping. You can sense the danger looming as the characters navigate the mountain, but it becomes clear that the real threat isn’t just the harsh terrain or frigid temperatures. Holliday expertly escalates the tension as the mystery of what happened to this group unfolds. It is during this climb that the characters’ true natures are revealed, posing a greater risk than avalanches or any lurking dangers on the mountainside.

Susi Holliday has delivered another fantastic, suspenseful thriller that is sure to please her longtime fans. The Hike will keep you engaged and glued to every page. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Mild spoilers ahead. I found the book enjoyable and fun, but it felt a bit average overall. It was nice that it wasn’t overly challenging. I picked it up for $5 on Kindle, especially since I had visited the Alps this summer. The intrigue from the start—wondering who the two remaining characters were—kept me engaged. I also appreciated the woods section, which added a nice element of suspense and horror possibilities. The author clearly has experience hiking in the Alps; that authenticity came through. However, there was some awkward repetition regarding the idea that many characters have secrets, which felt more like telling than showing. While there was enough dialogue, I wished for more context and observational details. Additionally, the portrayal of police work seemed under-researched. I found the chapters focused on the village and the police uninteresting, as the characters lacked depth. The ending, too, felt a bit absurd. It was entertaining, particularly in how the characters conflicted with one another. However, Catherine’s conversation with the police about Paul’s assault seemed off—why would they care more about her setting him up than the actual events? The character in the red jacket piqued my interest, but his role was only vaguely explained. To keep the plot engaging, it sometimes veered into ridiculous territory. Overall, it was enjoyable, but I almost would have preferred an unresolved ending rather than a neat conclusion.

I chose “The Hike” by Susi Holliday as my Kindle First Reads selection, and it turned out to be a great decision, providing hours of engaging entertainment. The book features a distinctive plot filled with suspense that kept me eagerly flipping pages to discover which of the four unlikable main characters would make it through the mountain hike. The writing is excellent, and the motivations of the characters are gradually unveiled. At its core, the story revolves around sibling rivalry, infidelity, and greed. Two sisters and their husbands embark on a mountain hike, each with their own hidden agendas. The plot is captivating and the pacing is brisk. I can’t wait to read more from this author. It’s rare for me to enjoy a book so thoroughly that lacks even a single sympathetic character.

This book captivated me from the very first page; I finished it in a single day. I couldn’t wait to discover how everything would unfold and connect. The writing was exceptional, and it’s one of those stories that makes you feel like you have it all figured out, only to realize you’re far from the truth. An excellent read!

It’s a light read, making it perfect for evening enjoyment.

“The Hike” by Susi Holliday is a captivating mystery thriller that truly stands out. It was an Amazon Prime selection a while back, and while such picks can be hit or miss, this one definitely hit the mark for me.

The blurb that initially drew me in reads: “Sisters Cat and Ginny travel with their husbands to the idyllic Swiss Alps for a hiking holiday…only two of the four hikers make it down from the mountain.” The story unfolds with secrets, intrigue, betrayal, and murder, complete with unexpected plot twists.

The novel boasts several strong elements – excellent writing, vivid descriptions that transport you to the Alps, and well-crafted characters. While there were a few moments that stretched believability, I found it easy to suspend my disbelief as a reader.

One of the most impressive feats the author accomplished was creating four unlikable and unsympathetic main characters. Typically, readers gravitate toward a relatable hero with good intentions, but here, none of the characters fit that mold, and I was still thoroughly invested in the story! All four characters were irritating in their own ways (and yes, there were multiple points of view), but the focus remained on the sisters, Cat and Ginny. Despite their lack of redeeming qualities, I was compelled to follow their journey to discover who would emerge as the most aggrieved ‘victim’ of past grievances, and who would be driven to commit murder. (This isn’t a spoiler; the prologue lays out the premise.)

About a third of the way in, I found myself weary of the sisters’ constant squabbling, but then the author introduced a twist that propelled the narrative into the second act. The writing is quite strong overall. The structure includes a prologue that felt a bit extraneous, along with some flash-forwards and shifts in perspective. So, be mindful if you prefer a more straightforward narrative style. There’s also a notable amount of strong language, though it feels more like an occasional spice than a staple.

In summary, the novel succeeded for me, and clearly for many others as well, as evidenced by its numerous positive reviews. Released in October 2022, “The Hike” remains a top contender on Amazon, consistently ranking within the top few thousand. If you enjoy books like “Gone Girl,” “The Girl on the Train,” and “The Woman in Cabin 10,” I’m confident you’ll appreciate “The Hike.” I give it 4.5 stars.

This book is packed with twists and turns! I picked it as my Kindle FirstReads choice for September 2022, and it kept me guessing right up to the final page.

The story revolves around two couples on a hiking trip: Cat and her husband Paul, along with Cat’s younger sister Ginny and her husband Tristan. Four people ascend the mountain, but only two return. Initially, they attribute the incident to rock avalanches, but it quickly becomes evident that foul play is involved, and each character is hiding secrets.

The narrative alternates between the four characters, with Cat emerging as the main protagonist, while short chapters from an unidentified male add intrigue. The plot unfolds over a single weekend, and while the characters aren’t particularly likable, I don’t mind unlikable characters as long as they have some redeeming qualities. Unfortunately, these characters lack any redeeming traits, which made me indifferent to their fates. However, this worked well within the context of the story, as the mystery of who survived (their identities remain undisclosed until about 80% in) kept me engaged.

Some twists were somewhat predictable, and while the ending contained another significant twist, I found it abrupt and lacking satisfaction, even for a thriller.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a fast-paced read, filled with short chapters that had me eagerly turning the pages, especially as a fan of psychological suspense and thrillers!
