I had considered these types of units before but never took the plunge. Now, I absolutely love this one and can’t believe I waited so long to buy it. A recent trip to Hawaii prompted me to take another look, and I chose this model for several reasons:
Hybrid construction: The combination of a sturdy support structure and a soft silicone body was the main reason I opted for this one. Other models were either hard plastic or completely soft silicone. This design allows me to achieve a secure seal (thanks to the soft edge), control the flow (with the soft spout), and maintain a comfortable grip (due to the rigid structure) without any collapsing like you would get with just silicone. It’s the ideal blend.
The carrying case was a great feature, enabling me to discreetly carry it to the bathroom without drawing attention. When my bag got too full at one point, I simply clipped it to the outside with no issues.
The silicone interior was easy to clean with toilet paper and wipes in the stall until I could sanitize it properly, all while feeling clean and not grossed out.
Approaching fifty, I’m done with the limited options of either squatting over toilets or feeling like I’m sitting on unsanitary surfaces or dealing with unpleasant wetness. Carrying a backpack complicates things further as it makes balancing while squatting difficult; I needed a Plan C. This unit creates a solid seal, allowing me to relieve myself, even with a strong flow, without any spills. When I tip it forward while removing it, it pulls away any remaining moisture from my body, and the slippery silicone sheds almost all the liquid, leaving just a couple of drops. I’ve used it at the airport, on long flights (where the bathrooms are horrible), at national park latrines, and while hiking. I was thrilled not to have to squat, making the whole process quick and easy.
I know the size might be a concern for some, but it didn’t bother me. It’s not ‘small,’ yet I think it’s discreet enough in its carrying case. It fits easily into a small shoulder sling purse. I prefer the larger size for grip because I never peed on my hand once. I did have one mishap when I rushed and didn’t seal it correctly against my body—totally my fault. I learned my lesson and haven’t had any issues since. This has become a must-have in my bag, and I won’t leave home without it!

I’d like to share my experience with three different devices—yours may vary. As many reviewers have mentioned, practice is essential for feeling comfortable using these outdoors. Start by trying them in the shower, then move to your bathroom at home before heading outside.
For all three devices, I found that zipped pants or shorts work better than drawstring ones since you can unzip without having to pull down your clothing. With the Freshette and EllaPee, you can use your free hand to move your underwear to the side.
I’ve owned a P-style for years and used it occasionally. Pros: it’s a single piece of hard plastic that won’t collapse, making it easy to store and clean, and it’s the smallest of the three. Cons: it has an open top, which increases the likelihood of spills. When using the hard plastic to wipe, you need to be careful. It’s also tricky to pull your underwear to the side without risking leaks.
I also have a newer version of the Freshette. I’ve practiced with it but haven’t used it on hikes yet. Pros: its design cups your lady bits, and the open area rests against your body, minimizing spills. The silicone is fairly rigid, providing solid support without being as hard as the P-style. Cons: the tube connects to the body of the device, making it a potential failure point if it’s not securely sealed. While sealing it at home helps, it may not hold up after being jostled around in a bag.
For me, the EllaPee is the best of the three. Pros: it also cups your lady bits, and the large opening is snug against your body. Its main body is made of soft silicone with a harder support structure, and it’s a single piece, which reduces failure points. It’s the easiest to use with zipped pants or shorts while moving your underwear aside. Cons: it’s larger than the P-style but smaller than the Freshette. The carrying bag it comes with is only big enough for the device, so it doesn’t accommodate wipes for cleaning, but that’s a minor issue for me.

I bought this along with the Venus to Mars female urination devices to compare them. They are similarly priced, serve the same purpose, and come with a carry case. I initially thought I would prefer this one due to its soft silicone rim and enclosed exit tube. However, I found it challenging to aim the stream properly, as it sometimes comes out in a spiral and changes direction unpredictably. I didn’t encounter this issue with the Venus to Mars. While it’s usable, I have to be more cautious with aiming. On the plus side, the fit and comfort were satisfactory. It is larger and bulkier compared to the Venus to Mars, making it a bit less discreet. Perhaps it would perform better for urinating into a bottle, but I haven’t tried that yet.
