Another thrilling read from Lucy Clarke! I’ve been quite vocal about my recent frustrations with thrillers, as they often rely on similar plots and over-the-top twists. While The Hike does incorporate some familiar tropes, Clarke’s writing and character development are commendable. The story revolves around a small group of characters, and I must admit I saw most of the twists and antagonists coming. However, I don’t need to be shocked with every book I read; I appreciate a more plausible narrative over one that features twists designed to leave you speechless.

The Hike follows four longtime friends on a getaway in the breathtaking wilderness of Norway. Their four-day hiking trip takes a turn for the worse, shrouded in suspicious events. The book unfolds at a slow pace, which I enjoy, though I understand that many readers prefer a quicker tempo. The first half focuses more on character depth with some hints of intrigue, while the setting—imagined Norway—was an absolute delight to envision.

While I found some of the side characters to be a bit cliched, that’s somewhat expected when they’re not fully fleshed out. The ending did take a dramatic turn, but I found it entertaining nonetheless. As someone with a fear of heights, I’ll admit that a good portion of the book left me with sweaty palms and in need of occasional breaks. This reaction speaks volumes about the book’s pacing and how engrossed I was in the narrative.

I wholeheartedly recommend this to fellow thriller enthusiasts. Think of it as The Descent without the caving and monsters, but with some dubious Norwegians instead. It may not be groundbreaking, but it definitely satisfies that craving for a twisty thriller.

    Luvtoread!

Four close friends embark on their annual girls’ trip, this time venturing out of their comfort zones to the stunning yet perilous mountains of Norway. For four carefree days, they aim to escape their mundane routines and catch up on life—discussing everything from babies and careers to regrets. While not all are keen on the hiking adventure, their mutual support shines through, even as they secretly long for a sunny beach getaway in an exotic locale.

In a quaint Norwegian village, the locals are welcoming yet somewhat distant, providing the women with essential hiking advice and warnings about potential dangers. As they traverse the wilderness, an unsettling feeling creeps in, as if they are being watched by an unseen presence. Tensions rise when the group uncovers a dark secret that puts them in jeopardy, compounded by the fact that two of the women are hiding painful truths. Only one of them is poised to reveal a deeply shameful secret that could shatter their friendships—or worse, cost a life.

I was captivated by this book from start to finish. As a fan of locked room mysteries and thrillers, I found this story compelling, despite its outdoor setting. The writing is so engaging that I reluctantly set the book down to attend to real life. I’ve officially become a fan of Lucy Clarke; having previously enjoyed “One of the Girls,” I was eager to dive into this tale.

The atmospheric descriptions brought the scenery to life, making me feel like an invisible companion on their hiking journey. It was thrilling and entertaining, with danger lurking at every turn. The characters were not always warm and fuzzy; their flaws added a spicy edge to the story, enhancing its appeal. I highly recommend this book and eagerly await Lucy Clarke’s next novel, as well as exploring her earlier works.

My heartfelt thanks to the publisher, Penguin Group Putnam/G.P. Putnam Sons, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this fantastic book. My thoughts and opinions are my own and unbiased.

I rate this novel an enthralling 4.5 MESMERIZING AND EXCITING 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌠 STARS!!

I preordered this book months ago because I’m a big fan of this author, and it did not disappoint! It was an exhilarating read filled with drama and laughter, as well as moments of fear and frustration. I’m still on the fence about whether I actually liked any of the characters or if I’d want to be friends with them. For now, my answer is no, but it definitely made me reflect on the nature of friendship—how it’s rarely fair or equal, yet we all navigate through it. I truly enjoyed this book!

The book was mediocre. It’s a tale that feels overly familiar and lacks originality. 2.5 stars.

    What’s it about?
Liz, Maggie, Helena, and Joni have been friends since childhood. Although their lives have taken very different paths, they make it a point to vacation together every year. This time, however, they’re embarking on a multi-day hike in the Norwegian mountains instead of a beach getaway. With no cabins, just tents, they aim to leave their daily routines behind. But recently, a local woman mysteriously vanished along this very route… and the feeling of being watched grows increasingly unsettling.

    My conclusion:
This was my first book by Lucy Clarke, which I read in its original English version. I’m glad I didn’t wait for the German edition, as I quickly found my rhythm and immersed myself in the Norwegian landscape alongside the friends. The characters are well-developed, and the alternating chapters from each of their perspectives reveal much about their personalities, fears, and dreams. Additionally, there are brief interludes focused on the search for a woman who lies motionless on a ledge below the summit. Her identity remains a mystery, adding to the tension. It’s not a bloody or fast-paced thriller; instead, the sense of threat lingers in the background, building anticipation for its eventual reveal. There are numerous red herrings, and the full picture remains elusive until the very end. I thoroughly enjoyed this thriller and highly recommend it!

This book was a disappointment. It’s unbelievable that the more I read, the more it leaned into humor. The plot twist was the worst I’ve ever encountered.

Embarking on a hike along an unfamiliar trail brings unexpected twists and turns that both surprise and enchant you. However, as the path sharpens and the twists loop back unexpectedly, a sense of fear begins to creep in. This mirrors the journey of the four hikers—what starts as a pleasurable adventure swiftly transforms into a chilling nightmare. It’s a beautifully crafted story that resonates deeply. I highly recommend it.

As a devoted fan of Lucy Clarke, I was excited to dive into her latest novel, and it certainly lived up to my expectations! I loved the alternating perspectives of the four characters; each voice was uniquely crafted and added depth to the story. From the very first page, I was captivated, and Lucy’s vivid descriptions brought the breathtaking mountain landscapes to life. Having hiked myself, I could almost feel the thrill of being on the magnificent Blafjell mountain in Norway. It felt like I experienced the adventure without ever leaving my seat. This book is a brilliant escape and an absolute must-read!

Lucy Clarke’s work has reignited my passion for reading novels! This book is fantastic, filled with captivating twists and turns, and is beautifully written. Don’t pay attention to the comments about the “unusual” plot; it only adds to the intrigue. If you’re tired of the same old clichés, this is definitely for you. The characters are vividly imagined. Absolutely excellent!

The characters felt one-dimensional and followed familiar stereotypes, but the book had a good pace, and the ending, while predictable, was engaging.
